About Bandipur National Park

Bandipur National Park is one of India's best known sanctuaries, and is an important Project Tiger reserve. It is located in the Chamarajanagar district of southern Karnataka in south India, and is contiguous with the Mudumalai National Park in the neighbouring state of Tamil Nadu, the Wynad Wildlife Sanctuary in Kerala, and the Nagarhole National Park to the northwest.

It is home to around seventy tigers and over three thousand Asian elephants (as per the 1997 census [1]), along with leopards, dholes, gaur and sloth bears. Bandipur is part of the Nilgiri Biosphere Reserve.

The Western Ghats, Nilgiri Sub-Cluster (6,000+ km²), including all of Bandipur National Park, is under consideration by the UNESCO World Heritage Committee for selection as a World Heritage Site.

Flora and Fauna of Bandipur National Park

A sanctuary of 90 km² was created at this site in the Bandipur Reserve Forest in 1931. As it was realised that this was too small for effective wildlife conservation, leading to the instituting of the Venugopala Wildlife Park at this site, extending over 800 km².

The Bandipur Tiger Reserve was constituted in 1973 by carving out 880 km² from the Wildlife Park. Recognised under Project Tiger in 1973 this park has boasted constant rise in Tiger population. Also famous for Sandalwood trees and rare species of Flora

Geography of Bandipur National Park

Bandipur National Park's altitude between 680-1454 metres and is situated south of the Kabini river at the foothills of the Western Ghats. The rivers of Kabini, Nagur and Moyar flow through the reserve. Climate - Winter minimum 10, Summer maximum 28 degrees, Monsoon from June to September and best time to visit is open throughout the year but preferably in monsoon when wildlife is plenty and forest is green. Greenery is quite lean when viewed from road but gets thicker as we proceed into the forest.
Access from Airport Access From Airport

The nearest airport is situated at Bangalore. Indian Airlines flies to Bangalore from Delhi and Mumbai seven days a week. The departure timings from Delhi are 6:15, 16:30 and 19:55 and from Mumbai 6:15, 9:30, 13:30, 17:30 and 20:45. From Bangalore one can drive down to Mysore and take one of the frequently operating buses or a private taxi to reach Bandipur. The taxi charges range between Rs. 1200 to 2000.



Access From Railways Access From Railways

The nearest railhead is Nanjangud town (55 km/ 1.5 hrs) but it is advisable to travel to Mysore which is the most convenient airport. The Swarna Jayanthi Exp. (Dep. 6:00, Mon) connects Delhi with Mysore. Mumbai is connected through the Sharavathi Exp. (21:30, Tue), while Chennai is connected through the Mysore Exp. (21:45, Daily). Another option would be to travel to Bangalore which is conveniently connected to most of the Indian cities through regular trains. Buses and private taxis can be easily hired from Bangalore or Mysore to reach Bandipur.



Access by RoadwaysAccess From Roadways

Bandipur National Park is located on the main Mysore-Ooty highway. The most convenient way to reach Bandipur from Bangalore is to drive to Mysore and take the Ooty road from there and drive via Nanjangud and Gundlupet from where the park is just a 30 min drive. A place worth visiting at Nanjangud is the Nanjundeshwara temple. Regular KSRTC buses and taxis are easily available from Bangalore. Taking an early morning bus to Mysore and changing to an Ooty bus there is the best option. The average time taken to reach Bandipur by road from Bangalore is around 5-6 hours.
Travel Tips For Visiting the National Park

Follow the rules, for e.g., do not walk around if you are not permitted to do so

• Do not disturb the animals during day time as most of the nocturnal animals sleep during day time.

• Do not try to irritate the animals or make them angry by teasing them.

• Wear clothes in shades of brown and green as they are less disturbing to the environment.

• Avoid wearing perfumes and do not smoke in restricted areas.

• Animals are extremely weary of the human voice. Don’t make noise, don’t play music and please don’t honk car horn.

• Take official guides along with you on the park trip.

• Do not smoke inside the park.

• Picking of plants and insects is strictly prohibited.

• Wear loose fitting and simple clothes that blend with the park surroundings.

• For the safety of the visitors, walking and hiking within the vicinity of the park is not allowed.

• Camping and picnicking is not allowed within the park.

• Carry plenty of water along with you.

• Carry Personal medication and insect repellent.

• Carry Binoculars, Cameras, film rolls and Flashlight along with books and other reading material.

• Do not use flash or intrusive photography.

• Don’t leave behind any litter and plastic bags are big hazards for animals.

• Comfortable walking shoes are appropriate than the fashionable ones.
