About Kanha National Park
Situated in the Indian state of Madhya Pradesh, the picturesque Kanha National Park was the inspiration behind Rudyard Kipling's unforgettable classic Jungle Book. The romance of the Kanha National Park has not reduced over time-it is still as beautiful.
Located in the Mandla district of Madhya Pradesh, Kanha national park cum Tiger reserve extends over an area of over 1,940-sq-kms. The major feature of this region's interesting topography is the horseshoe shape valley and the whole park area is surrounded by the spurs of the Mekal. The Surpan River meanders through Kanha's central Maidans, grasslands that cover the extensive plateau. Steep rocky escrapments along the edges offer breathtaking views of the valley.
The park was created in 1955 by a special law and, since then, it has dedicated itself in preserving a variety of animal species. Many endangered species have indeed been saved here. Today Kanha is among the few most scenic and beautiful wildlife reserves in Asia. This 'Tiger Country' is the ideal home for both predator and prey.
By far the most striking features of this region are the open grassy meadows, where sighting blackbuck, swamp deer, sambhar and chital is common. And, if one can transcend into time, a barefooted Mowgli would perhaps come padding along the dusty trail, for this is the land of Kipling's Jungle Book.

Fauna in Kanha National Park
The main wildlife attractions in the park are tiger, bison, gaur, sambhar, chital, more pictures.... barasingha, barking deer, black deer, black buck, chousingha, nilgai, mouse deer, sloth bear, jackal fox, porcupine, hyena, jungle cat, python, pea fowl, hare, monkey, mongoose, tiger, and leopard.
The birds species in the park include storks, teals, pintails, pond herons, egrets, peacock, pea fowl, jungle fowl, spur fowl, partridges, quails, ring doves, spotted parakeets, green pigeons, rock pigeons, cuckoos, papihas, rollers, bee-eater, hoopoes, drongos, warblers, kingfishers, woodpeckers, finches, orioles, owls, and fly catchers.
However, if one animal species were to represent Kanha, it would probably be the barasingha, or the swamp deer. The barasinghas at Kanha are unique, being the hard ground variety, which populate the large open tracts of grass amidst the forests of teak and bamboo. Twenty years ago, the barasingha was faced with extinction but some desperate measures including the fencing-off of some animals helped save them and again the air in Kanha bugle with their rutting calls.

Near Kanha National Park is Bamni Dadar visited by every tourist who comes to the national park. This place is also known as the sunset point. The Kanha National Park is at it scenic best at this point. The sunset from this spot is mesmerizing. The eminent natural splendor of the park comes to the fore here. The grazing sambhar, barking deer, gaurs, and other animals make the ambience magical.

Access From Airport Jabalpur is the nearest airport, while Nagpur is the nearest most convenient airport. Indian Airlines operates daily Delhi-Nagpur (7:15) and Mumbai-Nagpur (6:40 & 19:40) flights. Jet Airways also has a daily flight schedule of Mumbai-Nagpur and Delhi-Nagpur.
Access From Railways Jabalpur (169 kms/4 hrs) is the nearest railhead. Daily trains between Delhi and Jabalpur are Mahakoshal Exp. (16:25) and Gondwana Express (14:30), while Mumbai is connected through the Mahanagari Exp. (00:10), Rajendra Ngr Exp. (23:40), Kolkata Mail (21:25), LTT RJPB Exp. (22:10) and Gorakhpur Express (6:35). Other major trains plying to Jabalpur include Sanghamitra Exp. (Bangalore-Jabalpur, 6:57, Tue & Fri) and Varanasi Exp. (Chennai-Jabalpur, 17:30, Mon & Sat).
Access From Roadways There are regular to and fro bus services available from Jabalpur to Kanha. Cars can be hired from all the nearby towns to reach Kanha, the choice should however be an all terrain 4 wheel petrol vehicle. The drive from Nagpur to Kisli takes around 6 hours by car. The travel up to Seoni (130 km) on the Jabalpur National Highway is a smooth drive. From Seoni, take a right turn to Keolari, Nainpur and Chiraidongri to finally reach the Kisli gate of the park. Alternately, to reach the Mukki gate, divert away from Seoni through Balaghat and Boihar. Another option is the drive from Jabalpur (well connected by train to major Indian cities) via Tikaria and Mandla. To reach the park from Nagpur, take the NH6 to Bhandara. From there state roads lead to Kanha (Mukki) via Balaghat and Baihar.

Follow the rules, for e.g., do not walk around if you are not permitted to do so
• Do not disturb the animals during day time as most of the nocturnal animals sleep during day time.
• Do not try to irritate the animals or make them angry by teasing them.
• Wear clothes in shades of brown and green as they are less disturbing to the environment.
• Avoid wearing perfumes and do not smoke in restricted areas.
• Animals are extremely weary of the human voice. Don’t make noise, don’t play music and please don’t honk car horn.
• Take official guides along with you on the park trip.
• Do not smoke inside the park.
• Picking of plants and insects is strictly prohibited.
• Wear loose fitting and simple clothes that blend with the park surroundings.
• For the safety of the visitors, walking and hiking within the vicinity of the park is not allowed.
• Camping and picnicking is not allowed within the park.
• Carry plenty of water along with you.
• Carry Personal medication and insect repellent.
• Carry Binoculars, Cameras, film rolls and Flashlight along with books and other reading material.
• Do not use flash or intrusive photography.
• Don’t leave behind any litter and plastic bags are big hazards for animals.
