Periyar Wildlife Sanctuary

Periyar Wildlife Sanctuary is located in Kumily, in the Idukki district of Kerala. The total area of the park is around 778 sq kms.The summer temperature in the Periyar Wildlife Sanctuary ranges between 21°C to 24°C. However, in winters it is pretty cool and pleasant. Monsoons arrive in the months of July and August. It was at Kanha that the eminent zoologist George Schaller undertook the first ever-scientific study of the tiger. Another landmark at Kanha is the preservation of the 'hard ground' Barasingha. This was achieved by extending the grasslands, relocating villages and by increasing habitat.
