Spice Village Hotel PeriyarTrue to its name, the Spice Village in the heart of the cardamom country of Kerala offers visitors to live and witness wildlife and natural beauty. Spice Village is a group of white washed bungalows with thick elephant grass thatched roofs and large verandahs all around. The bungalows are scattered around the Village's luxuriant spice gardens, many of which are used in the resort's kitchen. The resort has limited room service since it is spread out over eight acres. However, the buffet meals are lavish affairs with vegetarian and non-vegetarian dishes. The meals are laid out in the resort's dining room. All around are handmade tables and benches made from rubberwood. There is another restaurant, The Tiffin Room, with its more than a hundred year old antique rosewood furniture. In addition, there is a well-stocked bar. At the centre of the village is the swimming pool and there are facilities for badminton, table tennis and a host of indoor games. The hotel has a resident botanist to answer guest's queries about the wide variety of trees and spices around. The hotel also provides trips to explore the Periyar Tiger Reserve by boat. Sariska itself is a wide valley with two large plateaus and is dotted with places of historical and religious interest, including the ruins of the Kankwari Fort, the 10th century Neelkanth temples, the Budha Hanumab Temple near Pandupol, the Bharthari Temple near the park office, and the hot and cold springs of Taalvriksh. The large Siliserh Lake is at the north-eastern corner. The forests are dry deciduous, with trees of Dhak, Acacia, Ber and Salar. The Tigers of Sariska are largely nocturnal and are not as easily seen as those of Ranthambhor. The park also has good populations of Nilgai, Sambar and Chital. In the evenings, Indian Porcupine, Striped Hyaena, Indian Palm Civet and even Leopard are sometimes seen. The forests are lush during and immediately following the monsoon, but during the dry months of February May there is a shortage of water and in consequence mammals are attracted to water holes. At this time of year visibility is good because of the sparse foliage. Sariska is excellent for birdwatching and has an unusually large population of Indian Peafowl.
